I think it’s a really interesting book because of the action and the dramatic.

Faber sacrifices his own life and Germany’s last chance to win the war for his love, for Lucy.

I think the dramatic between love and the live of a spy is very interesting.

Another fact is that this story could be real, maybe it happened nearly like its written in the Thriller of Ken Follett. My personal opinion is, that Ken Follett is one of the greatest writer and I like every book of him, especially “Eye of the Needle”. I hope you get inspired of my report to read Ken Follett and my personal tip is the book “The Pillars of the Earth”.

Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World shows a possible scenario in near future. With his thought of a perfect society where there are no crimes, resources are valued, consuming is very important and isolation is a foreign word. An ideal society is created by demoralizing people in conditioning centres and teaching them how to behave. A caste system takes care of the social differences and soma makes life adorable in any case. The correct production of humans is ensured by revolutionary techniques in fertilizing an egg and gaining a maximum of fetuses. Values like having sex with each other gain a completely different meaning in Huxley’s society. Wealth has to be reinterpreted and cannot be an indicator for luxury anymore. The castes are most likely the reinterpretation of wealth, the higher the caste is the better you are. Aldous Huxley published a newer book called Brave New world Revisited where he discusses if today’s society is developing to such one described in Brave New World. One thing is sure, the thought behind his book is very challenging and is the reason why the novel is banned in certain countries. Not only is the thought disgusting but also somehow possible at the same time. Regarding today’s genetic engineering one really has to fear near future. Brave New World is a book that requires a lot of reading skill. It is no easy read and takes time since the English used is kept at a high level of language. Concentration is another important requirement. Even I had to struggle reading the book but somehow got it read and understood. I really recommend the book for anyone that is interested in science-fiction and realism at the same time. Finally, I have to admit that it was a great read for me and a lot of knowledge I gathered. There is even a movie based on the story of this novel. The link to an extract can be found below.

The story begins with Henry Faber returning to his rented room and making a coded transmission to Germany. Then suddenly the landlady comes through the door and Faber kills her. Meanwhile the British Intelligence captured the most German Agents and turned them into double Agents. A young soldier was recalled from the Italian Front, he used the room with the murdered landlady and he identifies Henry Faber as a German officer.

Farber had the mission to discover the Allies’ landing plans, an incompetent German agent brought him the message, he killed him immediately.

Thereupon, Faber tries to finish his mission and took the pictures of the fake building.

There was only an army of plastic, during this action he has to kill a few peoples like some home guards.

The killing gets Goodwin close on Faber’s tracks, and the British realise that the entire success of the impending D-Day depends upon capturing Faber before he gets his photos to Germany.

Thereupon follows a long chase across Northern England and Scotland, while Farber tries to get the photos to a German U-boat in Aberdeen.

Already driven nearly to the end of endurance, Faber finally sets out on a small trawler, but gets caught and shipwrecked in a fierce storm, barely managing to get on the shore of Storm Island.

On this lonely Island he met Lucy and David. Lucy becomes physically engaged with Faber, though he seems to really come to love someone for the very first time in his life.

If you want to know how the story ends, you have to read the book.

Aldous Leonard Huxley was born on the 26th of July in 1894 and died on the 22nd of November in 1963. Aldous Huxley was a famous English writer and a member of the famous Huxley Family. Born in Godalming, surrey in the UK he was the son of his father Leonard Huxley and his mother Julia Arnold. Huxley attended school in Hillside, then he was educated at Eton College. In 1908 his mother died and in 1911 he started to suffer from an illness which made him blind for more than 2-3 years. That was exactly the reason why Huxley could not participate in World War 1. Finally, he studied English literature at the Balliol College and even gave classes. Huxley’s first novel was completed at the age of seventeen. However, this novel was unpublished. It was this time when he started to think about science that is generally dehumanizing mankind. His most famous novel Brave New World appeared in the 1932 and is today a challenging classic. In 1937 the author moved to South California with his wife Maria and his son Matthew. He now started a life in the US and mainly lived there till his death. Furthermore, he published Ends and Means in 1937 and again focuses on civilization. After World War 2 Huxley applied for US citizenship but was not intending to take up arms for the US. That is why he did not get the US citizenship. However, he remained in the country. Then his wife Maria died in 1955 and one year later he married Laura Archera, who was also an author. In 1960 Huxley was diagnosed cancer and died in 1963. In the meantime he wrote lots of different stories. He also wrote about philosophical topics and published dramas, short stories and poems.

About a boy – summary

The novel ‘‘About a boy‘‘ from Nick Hornby deals with a friendship between a man called Will Freeman and a boy called Marcus who are really different but for all that they help each to find themselves.

The first main character is a twelve years old boy called Marcus. Marcus has many problems at home and at school. He lives with his mother Fiona in London, because his parents divorced. Fiona is depressive and one day she tries to kill herself. So Marcus is very afraid, that his mother dies and he would be alone. At school he has no friends, because he is very shy and most of the kids laugh at him because in their opinion he wears uncool clothes and has the wrong haircut.

The second main character is Will Freeman a 36 years old bachelor who never had to work for his money because his father writes a Christmas song and now he lives from the income from the royalties of the song. Most of his time he spends with smoking, watching TV, listening to albums and looking for women.

Their first meeting is in a park where Marcus kills a duck. Will helps him and tells the park-keeper, that the duck was dead, before Marcus threw a big sandwich on it. Since that time Marcus visits Will every day and a funny friendship begins. Will helps Marcus to fit into the modern world. He takes him shopping, buys him shoes and introduces him to the music of Nirvana. Marcus likes a girl in his class who‘s called Ellie . She is a fan of Kurt Cobain and after his death she is very sad and Marcus tries to help her in her sadness.
Will meets a woman called Rachel, he falls in love with her. She has a son who is about the same age as Marcus
In the end, Marcus evolves into a “normal” child for his age and Will ends up wanting to marry Rachel. Therefore, both Will and Marcus have started to live according to their age.

About a boy – the author

Nick Hornby is an English novelist and essayist. He was born on the 17. April 1957 in Redhill, Surrey, England. He was brought up in Maidenhead and was educated at Maidenhead Grammar School and Jesus College, Cambridge. His parents divorced when he was eleven. Now he lives in Highbury, in North London with his wife and his son. Hornby was first published with the book “Fever Pitch“. “High Fidelity“, his second book was published in 1995. His third novel, “About a Boy“, published in 1998. With the book’s success, Hornby began to publish articles in the Sunday Times, Time Out and the Times Literary Supplement. Besides he works as the pop music critic for The New Yorker.

About a boy – reading impression

In my opinion the book “About a boy” is funny, but it’s more attractive to younger people.
I like the relationship between Marcus and Will, because they helped each other with their problems and in the end both Will and Marcus have started to live according to their age.

The Savage Reservation is located in New Mexico and does not belong to the vastly spread World State. Life is completely natural and is comparable to our lives. There are no manipulations at all meaning that life in the reservation is untouched by the New World. The community living there is called Malpais. Religious rituals are practiced regularly. When Bernard and Lenina visit the reservation and talk to John, he finally realizes how hard his life was. John never really got in touch with the members of the Malpais. He was always treated as an outsider like his mother. Linda who slept with all men in the village (due to her conditioning in the New World) was hated and kept outside the Malpais. When John finally travels to London, he faces a very tough situation. Basically, John encounters an inferior feeling since he does not seem to get used to the New World. One proof for that is when he rejects Lenina showing his refusal of this particular society. Furthermore he starts a riot in front of the Hospital for the Dying and destroys some doses of soma. The dialogue between Mustapha Mond and John, also called the Savage, reveals John’s final decision of rejecting the New World. The Savage encounters a typical cultural clash where there is no solution for him at all. On the one hand returning back to the village would make him an outsider again, on the other hand he does not get used to the new world order. At the end, after having escaped to an abandoned lighthouse, John gets to know to have been filmed secretly and realizes he became part of a society he never wanted to be a part of. The last solution for him is to hang himself.

Characterization

Minor Charakters:

George:
The most importent person besides Blaze. He was like a father for Blaze in his adult-life. Told him to change his clothes to breash his teath, told him how to cook and clean and most important told him like to steal and betray.
He capitalized Blaze, but never betrayed him. He died before the story started and all we know about him is out of Blazes memory.

John:
Blaze first friend, what means the first one who know how to capitalize Blaze. He lived with Blaze in the orphanage and died with the age of 14.
He was smart and invalid and loved Blaze for being his cover.
When he died Blaze was coverless delivered to the Jurist.

The “Jurist”:
The Jurist was the conductor of the Hetton House (the orphanage).
He was the first real enemy Blaze ever had. He tries to defeat Blaze psychological, by telling him how worthless and silly he is. He never wanted Blaze to have a real chance and abused him uncountable times.

Officer Sterling:
He leads the investigations against Blaze after the hijacking and he`s also the guy who finally killed him.
He symbolisized perfectly the society which never gave Blaze a chance.
He didn`t want to know anything about Blazes past, didnt want to hear any apologizes for his behavior.
He just saw what Blaze did in the two days of his investigations and killed him finally ineroxable, by standing over the paralysed Blaze shooting in his head.
In a normal book, he would be the shiny hero to identify with, but in this one he is just another grey gradation.
